Sir, I realize this vid is a couple of years old, but I need to respectfully correct you. The NRR rating isn't the entire picture. We've a bony protrusion of our skull, directly behind each ear. It's called the Mastoid bone or process. It's especially porous, & conducts sound directly to the middle ear. Especially in an indoor range, the Mastoid will conduct all the loud reports to the middle ear, & cause permanent damage. As we typically lose >50% of our hearing before realizing that something is wrong, this bites people.
Shooting muffs cover the Mastoid, thereby protecting the middle ear. Please update your practices.
I justed to have the real big ear muffs which apparently should give you more protection than the standart ear muffs = Wrong! they were even worse than the standart! double plugging is in my opinion uncomfortable ! eather good earplugs or standart muffs in my opinion!

Double protection is the only smart way to go.
IMHO electronic is the way to go. I see too many people at the range who keep shooting when someone yells "Cease Fire" because they can't hear anything. Shutting out all sound can be a dangerous thing at the range.
Actually you can still damage your hearing with an earplug that eliminates all sound. You will get hearing loss through bone conduction. Full-sized muffs that cover the Cochlear bone are the best for you.
Im pretty much deaf and dont use ear protection barely at all because of that.

Wonder why guys don't end up deaf that saw action in war? Overrated. If you're a cop,, or protecting yourself hold on i need to put ear plugs in. lol. I never use ear plugs it's silly. I'm 50 and blow off many fireworks and plated drums for decades and my hearing is 100%!
This video doesnt take into account the fact that not everyone can handle earplugs. If you have sensitive skin that bruises easily or an external ear infection earplugs will make it worse. Also people with smaller ear canals can't handle earplugs or earbuds for that matter. And unless you have custom made earplugs moulded out of your ear canal said person are better off with Earmuffs.
What you don't cover is the fact that ear plugs by their nature protect from high frequency sounds more than ear muffs which are better at low frequencies. I'm not sure how guns line up on (as in how the sound energy is spread over the sound spectrum) this but some industrial equipment produce very low frequency noise that you can barely notice but will damage your hearing.
I am so screwed. The thugs upstairs are beating, stomping, and slamming things on the floor so loud that ear plugs aren't doing it. I was going to buy ear muffs tomorrow. That is crazy that thugs and a crazy stalking woman can be louder than gun shots.
I like earmuffs over earplugs mainly because I don't like things in my ears for long periods of time.
Earmuffs can be designed with built in headphones to allow you to listen to music or communicate clearly.
2-way communication headsets are always earmuffs because it is easier to mount a microphone to one of the ear cups.

Do most professional shooters double up? I know most police are taking a liking to a modified hearing aid for shooting, which gives them an NRR of 35 to 40.
Plugs are great – if you put them in correctly, and most people don't. Also depends on the shape of your ear. The NRR ratings are nominal – that doesn't mean you personally are getting that amount of noise reduction. Fitted plugs might be a worthwhile investment if shooting frequently.
