Take all the holidays you can including sick leave and sleep as often as necessary at work to survive, its a saftey issue for both the worker & employer, anyone that tells you otherwise has never done shift work or has forgotten what its like.

I'm a new nurse and I just started my first job on night shift. The first two weeks were the worst, but I'm getting used to it. I started doing yoga and that helped a lot. Some days it just feels so weird and empty, like I forget what I love to do haha.

Natural Tips for good night sleep:-
    1. Take Ashwagandha (Natural Herb) Tablets or Ashwagandharishtha Syrup before sleep. It will aid sleeping and reduces stress
    2. Practice Anulom Vilom Pranayam, OM Meditation and focus on your breath before sleep

Been working 2 years night shift, its starting to get hard for my body to tolerate this rythm. Lots of headaches, anxiety and weird chest pain when i don't get much sleep, i can't get to sleep during the day without taking some sort of medication and of course i try to rotate but i still develop some sort of resistance. I can't wait to get a day shift job (im a nurse too) because it has become really tough.

I'm not a nurse…I work 3rd shift night stock at a grocery store and have for 8 years. Kroger has a song about how our time is important, but the Kroger Warmachine calls for blood and skulls in the never ending war against Walmart, and every night is a slog because there is always a super sale building up or going on so set days off aren't common though we aren't being bounced around at different times generally.
I haven't really had a social life, and that's kind of past me by this stage in my life. I'm lucky in that I got a relatively disciplined mind that I can just tell myself it's time to sleep and I can, and I can sleep through just about anything.

Valid points!! I have been doing night shift for almost 3 years now, never thought this way though was able to balance things. Thanks Caroline for enlightening me with new things that I need to concentrate on.

My schedule is 11-7am so i have to sleep through the day and i have roommates that have a 2 year old and a new born 🙁 I got ear plugs and eyes mask and a box of melatonin from the 99 cent store they worked amazingly and i am never groggy in the morning

I take Melatonin (5mg) and it works amazing! I sleep through the night and wake up refreshed. It didn't give me nightmares either which Nyquil and Benadryl gives me

Hi there! Thanks for a great empowering video on night shift! I am starting my first RN job next month and will be working nights. Normally I don't drink any caffeine at all… what do you recommend about coffee and night shift? Will I need it or is it best to go without? I am also a light sleeper and caffeine inhibits my ability to sleep. :)

You can tell you are a nurse! And a very very good nurse! Proves nurses are so much better and nicer and caring than Dr's. I love your tips and they are very helpful. i have just started working an overnight shift and not loving it at all. i feel very depressed and tired. Your video has really helped me more than you know! Best video I have watched for help on this issue!

At almost 59 yrs old, I've accepted my first ever RN night shift! I was hired as a night supervisor! I'm terrified of the transition, both working nights and to step into supervisor shoes while I am transitioning! I am trying to fill my mind with all these ways to not only successfully accomplish this huge change but to excel at it. Your hints helped me to contemplate some hints that I'd not even though of, such as stay positive EVERY day, AND advice on how to maintain that positive attitude. Thank you for sharing. I plan to use the night shift to get my MSN… nurses that do not further their education in today's world are going to lose out on getting the positions they want even if they are well liked and qualified. Believe me, I've just lived that and it was really discouraging. I was so busy trying to stay busy with the registries that I felt like I couldn't go to school, and felt stuck. I am grateful for this job which gets me out of registry work, and I will make it work. But well, it is making me feel anxious.

I have been the General Manager in the adult night club industry for over 25 years working the night shift 6 nights a week – from 7pm till 3am
But I get paid from 6:30pm till I close the bar – then do the closing of the cashes – doing all the paper work so I finish at 3:30am – paid from 6:30pm till 3:30am.

Here are my tips for all you night shift workers:

    1) When shopping for a new apartment, find out if the people upstairs, next door, downstairs have young children, look for clues…kid toys is a good clue.
Young kids will make a lot of noise.
    2) See if there are older kids living near you, they enjoy loud music – think about when the kids have no daycare – or high school, they will be home. ( ouff the noise )
    3) See how long the sun shines on your windows
    4) Stay away from high traffic streets, trucks, buses, trains, schools.
    5) Cover your windows with sun blocking drapes or blinds.
    6) TRY.. and not drink anything before you sleep, less trips to the bathroom, hate waking up just to go pee.
    7) Be sure there are no barking dogs near your apartment.
    8) keep a routine go to bed always at the same time every night
    9) Having sex is a really good way to wind down your night, with your spouse or self-pleasure.
10 if you already have and apartment be sure to inform the tenants near you that you sleep day time, maybe they will make an effort and help reduce their noise.
NOTE: if there is one tenant that your on bad terms with – then do not tell them you sleep days –
    11) If you sleep to the sound of music or the sounds of nature be sure to have it on a timer and set it to turn off in 30 mins, this way it will not wake you when you are in a deep sleep.
    12) When you get home from work,,, relax, do nothing, lay down, sit down, collect yourself, release the drama, stress, get into your zone, get some MY TIME.

    Hugs to the females
    Props to the guys

This was wonderful, Caroline! I just started working as a clinician overnights 10p-8a four days a week and your tips on not over consuming on negative statistics is so true! Staying positive is the most important thing!!!

I don't have a gym close to me anymore and it sucks. I love nights and when I had a 24 hour fitness on my way home, I'd go after working 8, 12, or 16 hours no problem (the hard part was changing cause when I got there, it was game on). I dislike working out outdoor and there is a local gym/spa near me. It's pricey (Napa Valley area :P), but I'm going to join this payday since that is one major key to me feeling good and healthy enough to do my job properly.

I've been working night shifts now for the past 8 months now and given up going to the gym as I find I never feel I have the energy to go anymore :(
