The positions you sleep in with your partner can reflect your relationship. Whether you and your partner are tugging at the sheets at night or are tangled in each others’ arms, it is a reflection of the state that your relationship is in. According to Sleep Matters Club, “94% of couples who spend the night in contact with each other are happy with their relationship.”
There are many different kinds of sleeping positions and they each have their own separate meanings. Listed below are just a few couple sleeping positions:
The Spoon
Description
You have probably heard of the spoon position or spooning, but it is actually only preferred and adopted by 18% of couples. With both you and your partner lying on your sides, one person faces the other’s back and usually wraps their arms around their partner.
Meaning
This position reveals a sense of protectiveness and trust. It indicates intimacy between you and your partner because it reflects vulnerability and is a sexual position. Usually, the big spoon takes a more protective position over the other small spoon.
The Loose Spoon
Description
Similar to the spoon position listed above, the loose spoon involves you and your partner on your sides. However, unlike the spoon position, the loose spoon position simply has some space between you and your partner.
Meaning
The added space between you and your partner in the loose spoon position indicates intimacy similar to the spoon position. The loose spoon tends to reflect a more mature relationship because it shows that you and your partner still trust one another but do not feel it necessary to always be touching. Some space and quality sleep is important within every romantic relationship.
The Chase
Description
In the chase position, you and your partner are in a similar position as the spoon. Unlike the spoon position, the chase position involves either you or your partner being in pursuit of the other. It is a bit lopsided because one person has moved away from the other person and moved towards one side of the bed. In effect, it is considered as being “chased.”
Meaning
The person being “chased” may want to be pursued or may simply want more space. Also, an additional meaning may be that the small spoon or the person being “chased” is playing hard to get.
The Tangle
Description
This position is pretty self-explanatory because you and your partner are “tangled” together. The tangle position involves your legs and arms around one another, intertwined. You both are facing each other throughout the night.
Meaning
The tangle position is more rare and is an extremely intimate position. It reflects the deep emotions between you two and the need for physical connection.
The Unraveling Knot
Description
Beginning in the tangle position, the unraveling knot position later transitions to where there is space between you and your partner. In other words, you and your partner “unravel” from each other, hence the position is called “the unraveling knot.”
Meaning
The unraveling knot position reflects a stronger relationship than the tangle position because it demonstrates that your relationship does not need to always involve touching to be intimate. It is a great reflection of both intimacy and independence.
The Space Hog
Description
Also known as the superhero position, the space hog position involves one partner in a starfish position (“hogging” the bed) and the other person hangs off of the bed.
Meaning
The person who takes up most of the space in bed usually means that they are selfish and do not regard their partner’s needs. By taking up more space in bed, they are also dominating the space, which can indicate that they dominate the relationship. This position is also telling of the person who is being pushed off the bed because they are taking on a secondary or submissive role. The placement of heads is also indicative because the higher up or closer to the headboard you are, the more likely you are confident and have a high self-esteem.
The Back Kissers
Description
Sleeping with you and your partner’s backs touching, you are exemplifying the back kissers position. With contact along the spine, you and your partner are connected while also being able to relax. Back-to-back touching is also known as the cherish position and is practiced by 23% of couples.
Meaning
When you sleep back-to-back with your partner it signifies that your relationship is fairly new and you two have probably not been together for very long. Both partners are relaxed and comfortable in the position while still staying sexually connected.
